How to Charge Wireless Earbuds Safely and Quickly

So you have a brand new pair of sweatproof wireless earbuds. That’s great! Now that you’ve finished your three-hour trail run in the rain, it’s about time to give them a good charge. While you cool off in the grass with your electrolyte water, take some time to learn the ins and outs of charging your new tech toy. Read on to learn everything you need to know about how to safely and quickly charge your wireless earbuds.

First, even though you're using waterproof wireless earbuds, you should always make sure that they are completely dry before you charge them. Sure, your earbuds might be able to resist all that rainwater and sweat, but over time, moisture can seep in through cracks in the earbuds and cause damage to internal batteries or drivers. The moisture could also build up inside the case and cause internal damage to its electrical components.

Therefore, it is important to dry your wireless earbuds thoroughly before you put them in their case for charging, or even just for storage. To dry them, use a soft, absorbent cloth. Microfiber is a good choice, as it is very absorbent, it won’t leave behind lint and it won’t scratch the finish on your earbuds. Using the cloth, gently dry all the excess sweat or water off your earbuds, taking special care to avoid getting moisture inside the nozzles. Make sure there is no moisture remaining before you place them in their case for wireless charging.

What if you forgot your microfiber towel at home, or you’re mid-run and have to take out your earbuds for some reason? When it’s just not possible to completely dry your wireless earbuds before storing them, it is a good idea to at least shake off excess moisture and turn them off before placing them in their case. Then, as soon as you are able to, remove the earbuds from their case and dry both the earbuds and the case with a soft, absorbent cloth. In this situation, it would be a good idea to leave the case open to air dry and leave the earbuds out of the case so that they can air dry, too.

So, now your wireless earbuds are dry and you’re ready to charge them. If the wireless earbuds storage case is fully charged, you can simply place the earbuds in their case and let it do the work. While 15-20 hours is the typical battery life for most charging cases, some cases for Bluetooth wireless earbuds can hold a charge for up to 30 hours! Hopefully, you remembered to charge your earbuds case before your rainy run so that you can get your earbuds charging right away.

If you forgot to charge your earbuds storage case, you will have to wait to charge your wireless earbuds until you can connect your case to a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, or place it on a standard wireless charging pad. It is safe to store the earbuds inside their case while it is charging, and they will charge simultaneously with the case. 

Now, after you’ve used the charging case a few times, you might start to notice that it can get a little dusty inside. Eventually, if you don’t clean your earbuds regularly, ear wax and natural oils from your skin can build up in the case as well. Then, even if you keep your earbuds clean, putting them back in their case can make them dirty again. It’s best practice to clean your wireless earbuds regularly, as well as their case. This will ensure that your wireless earbuds continue to operate correctly and sound excellent.

If you have a set of wireless earbuds with a mic, you’ll want to make sure to clean the mic regularly as well. Dust can build up in the microphone and decrease the quality of your audio to listeners. 

The quickest way to charge your wireless earbuds is to keep their storage case charged and store them in their case when they are not in use. It’s also important to keep the case clean when it’s not in use, so that you can quickly wipe off your earbuds and place them in the case for storage without having to fuss with dust and lint buildup. Keeping the earbuds in the case for storage and charging keeps them safe from damage or loss. Keeping them clean keeps your ears healthy and your audio quality on-point.
